Mowing your lawn is a great way to enhance the curb appeal of your property in Ohio. However, if ruts are forming on your lawn while mowing, it can have the opposite effect. One reason that ruts could be forming on your lawn is that you aren't switching up your mowing patterns. You shouldn't be following the same pattern every single time because the soil can eventually sink due to the weight of the mower. Additionally, you should never mow when the soil is wet or soft. When the soil is soft, the mower will sink into it, causing ruts to form. However, if you've already caused ruts to form on your lawn, don't worry! There is a way to repair them, and you just need to remove any grass from the middle of the rut, add soil to raise up the rut, and then place the grass back on top.

You should switch up your mowing patterns each time you mow your lawn.

One of the biggest reasons why your lawn can develop ruts after being mowed is because the mower is following the same path every single time. This can cause the soil to sink over time because the mower is constantly putting pressure on the same spot. So, if you want to avoid this problem, you should switch up your mowing patterns each time you mow your lawn. By rotating the direction you mow, you won’t put as much stress on the soil, which will keep it from sinking and forming ruts.

Don't mow your lawn when it's wet or the soil is soft.

Another reason why your lawn can develop ruts after being mowed is because you were mowing on a wet lawn. When you do this, the mower wheels will sink into the soft soil, causing the ruts to form. To help prevent ruts from forming on your lawn, you should always wait until the ground has firmed up after rain to mow your lawn.

How to Repair Soil Ruts After Mowing Your Lawn

If you currently have ruts in your lawn, it's okay, there's a way to repair them! Here are some steps you can take to repair ruts after mowing:

  • Remove any grass from the center of the rut. There will be some grass in the middle of the rut, you will want to remove it from the rut and set it aside.
  • Add soil to the rut. Add enough soil to the rut to bring the height of the rut back up to normal. This will give the area a more natural look since it will be at the same height as the rest of your lawn.
  • Place the grass back onto the rut. Once you’ve filled the rut with soil, pick up the grass that you had placed to the side and put it back in its original spot.
Make sure you water the newly repaired areas of your lawn after the repairs are made to help the grass establish itself again!
